Developing the Game Plan

“Technology provides additional support for all learners”(Laureate Education, 2010).  This week I have reviewed my goals and GAME plan that I plan to carry out in the following weeks. The resources that I have gathered to carry out this plan are computers and a Smart Board for classroom and modeling use. While the computers are scarce in our school I have set aside times to have my students work on the computers three times a week. This will allow them to use them and become comfortable with the software needed.
I have found that my co-teachers in the building are going to be of great use to me and the GAME plan I have created on persuasive writing with the incorporation's of technology. One of my colleagues is very good with technology and looks forward to also attempting this technology plan with his own students after I partake. My co- workers and computers are the largest use of resources I plan to use throughout the next few weeks. I plan to have the students gather newspaper articles and persuasive ads to show the classroom in order to grasp a better understanding of persuasive writing and its uses outside of the classroom.
Throughout the next few weeks I plan to learn a great deal of information from each of the students within my classroom. To become a strong self-directed learner I am understand that my kids need the time and technology to themselves. While I have always been the teacher, I plan to become the facilitator and learn from my students.

  1. Hi Natalie,

It sounds like you have some great resources for your GAME plan! I think a critical thing you said was that you will be the facilitator for your students when they work with technology because they can figure things out with a group or on their own. I find that sometimes students can show me a few things about technology programs, which is why we should give them more time to investigate. Great ideas!

  2. Hi Natalie,

I don't know how much experience you have with a SmartBoard, but I think that if you don't have a great deal, another resource you need is TIME. I had a SmartBoard for four years, and I think by the fourth year I finally was getting the use out of it that it was made for. You talked about being a facilitator in the classroom, and a SmartBoard is the perfect tool to do that. If you plan correctly, and use the available digital tools, the SmartBoard can run a lesson as you direct from a distance. If you get students involved, they'll be eager to get to the board and get to work. Again, time is going to be another resource, but use your colleagues' knowledge too, and don't be afraid to try new stuff with it. Good luck!

  3. Natalie,

That is great that you have time set aside for your students to work with the computers. You had said that you do not have much access to the computers; do you have enough computers for all students to be on at one time? I know in my classroom, if I check out the mobile labs, I still have to use my back two student computers to accommodate all students in the class. I also like how you are going to have the students use newspaper ads in their research. Are you going to teach them how to look them up in the computers or are you going to start by using real newspapers in the classroom and then gradually moving into the computers for their searches?

You have such great ideas and it seems that you are ready to start carrying out your GAME Plan. I love how you are going to take a step back and learn from your students as well. Sometimes this is the best thing you can do to figure out how your students learn with technology. I know it was real easy to figure out who had experience and who did not. Great thoughts!
